Write a 6-8 page argumentative research paper that builds from one of the topics outlined in the Readings sections of They Say, I Say. You will develop your own idea in relation to one of the broad topics listed below; it is important that you have developed a specific research topic that you are interested in and not simply copied one of the topics below. The topics below are very broad–the articles cover a variety of subtopics–and I would like to see that you have identified your own path to research.
For example, the articles in the first section discuss the divisions of politics, race, gender, culture, class, and more. You will not be able to cover all of these topics in 6-8 pages, but you can focus on one of them.
Your research question should be unique.
Are we in a race against the machine? Articles by Carr, Thompson, Cullington, Wortham, Cadwalladr, Goldsmith, Turkle, and Tufekci.
Your paper should have a clear, focused thesis statement that makes an argument. I want to see that you have something to say about your topic in response to the critics who have come before you. You might not know what you want to say, or what argument you want to make when you start your research project. However, the more reading you do and the further you go in your research, the more you will start to develop an idea of what you want to contribute to this conversation. What ideas do you have? What arguments have stuck with you? How can you build on what has already been said?
Though the textbook provides a number of very good sources, I’d like to see that you do additional research for this paper. You’ll be required to utilize six sources that are not in our textbook, with at least three of these sources coming from scholarly journals. You can access many materials through the online databases, however I encourage you to make a trip to the library as well. This paper should be presented in MLA format with a Works Cited page. I want to see that you are utilizing sources in a variety of ways–quoting, summarizing, paraphrasing–and that you are distinguishing your ideas from those of your sources. I want to see that you are considering and addressing the opposing side as well as establishing the importance of your argument. I’m looking for papers that do not succumb to the dry, academic voice of a typical research paper, but instead develop a clear and engaged voice and style that shows your interest in the topic.

Start with a research question to help you explore your topic as you narrow your focus.
Spend a good amount of time reading and taking notes. Stay organized.
Extend your research over a number of weeks. If you hit a wall, take a few days to read the sources you do have, then go back and try again. As you read, you’ll uncover new terms to search, which will lead you to new and better sources.
