The following article should be one of the sources: Amireh, Amal ‘Activists, Lobbyists, and Suicide Bombers: Lessons from the Palestinian Women’s Movement’. Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa and the Middle East 32 (2) (2012): 437-446. Notes the professor shared regarding the article that should be taken into account:
In her article, Amireh highlights the difficult situation Palestinian women suffer from.
1-report about a woman being killed by her father/brother/cousin, which reflects the intensified patriarchy in Palestinian society. This also reflects the two battles women have to fight: one national battle against Israel, and another battle against men in their families and society.
2-HAMAS requesting wearing hijab while at work=This also reflects the politicisation of patriarchy as manifested in Hamas interfering in women’s personal choices.
3-gender and women’s rights are not recognisable= women’s rights are always pushed back as liberation struggle is perceived as more important.
4-actor shot because of ‘corrupting the society ideals’= very rigid understanding of what is moral and immoral
‘What connects these stories is that they concern Palestinian women directly, that they have serious implications for Palestinian society at large, and that they were all met by the silence of the women’s movement. There was no collective feminist or womanist response to any of these incidents: no statement, no op-ed piece, and no demonstration.’
Reasons of silence:
1-Palestinian women’s movement always abstained from engaging with three taboos: sexuality, militarisation and religion.
2-women issues are second priority=either because of more pressing issues such as national liberation or pertained to legitimacy issues as society would not accept this change.
Additional information that should be taken into account when coming up with the argument. Examples of destabilising gender hierarchies:
Challenging gender roles while practicing them.
They were part of the civil disobedience acts that sparked and sustained the first intifada, ‘from sit- ins and street demonstrations to rock throwing, arranging alternative schooling, garbage collection, food distribution, and other networks of support’.
Still these activities do not challenge prescribed gender roles.
With active participation: any case of injury would not be valued equally.
The militarisation of the First Intifada added extra pressure on women’s activism.
Two campaigns against women mobilized to limit and delegitimise their movement and their nationalist contributions: 1-Hijab campaign initiated in 1989 by the Islamic movement=hijab was not only a symbol of piety but also a national one. 2-The use of sex by women to recruit men.
Structure and argument guidance from the professor: the answers should have a clear structure, the first step is to define the question, put your interpretation of the question in an introduction: context, political debates, approach and your interpretation/argument, the answer should have a clear argument throughout, lastly, clear introductions and conclusions are extremely important.
