Chapter 10: Develop a Unique “Personal A-Story”

&

Chapter1: Network Like Crazy

Assignment: develop and draft your personal “A-Story” and practice it until it flows naturally. Your A-story should be a unique story about you.

Assignment: develop and draft your personal “A-Story” and practice it until it flows naturally. Your A-story should be a unique story about you.

You will write it and turn it in by WEDNESDAY at 11 AM PST!

Consider this your personal “log line” – a one sentence, unique description that lets someone know who you are, what you are about (your style, vision, influences) and what you want to do.

In developing your story, think about:

what do you do currently (student studying… with interests in…)
for this, use words like aspiring and emerging vs established (not you, yet.)
what do you want to do (find an internship, work in…)
what makes you different, unique and you – your bg, your pov, your…
what are things in your life or your background that have influenced who you are?
what are things that you are good at?
what are you most proud of?
what is an obstacle you have overcome? how did you do it?
what are your creative influences? who are your favorites?
what is your style, tone, vision (ie. indie film or network TV?)
what are you passionate about? (issues, topics, films, TV shows, creators…)
what makes you someone other people want to talk to?

Example of my A-Story when meeting network executives:

I’m a formerly tenured college professor turned episodic TV director. I’m two years and four episodes in. I want to direct shows about strong, interesting and quirky women – the kind of characters who show you how strong they are on the outside, to protect all the little shattered pieces of themselves that they hold together on the inside. My favorite shows are Killing Eve, Grey’s Anatomy and Good Trouble and if we go more old school, I love Lost, Dexter, Weeds and The Fosters. I want to book more episodes so I can finally not say that I’m a new TV director. I’d love to know more about what you do…

You will use this to help you have talking points for our networking session. You won’t read off your paper, but you can keep notes in front of you when you talk to the guests. This should be stuff that you KNOW and that you can “use” when you engage the speaker in conversation.

Write your unique, ONE PARAGRAPH A-story you will use to introduce yourself in the breakout rooms (which you do 3x)
FIVE of your real-life anecdotal one-liners (that Kirshner suggests in her book). You will use these in your Breakout rooms. These should show your positive attributes and qualities as a person.
Draft SIX questions for guest speakers. You should have three questions that you can ask any of the guests and three questions that are more specific certain kinds of speakers that interest you (such as writer, director, dp, etc).
