For this paper, you will choose a diagnosis that we have discussed, and describe how it has changed over time.
Depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, antisocial personality disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder would all be very appropriate topics with a well documented history.
Explore the history of the mental health diagnosis, and describe:
Who were the early pioneers of describing and naming the mental health condition (1 point)
How the name of the diagnosis has changed over time, and/or what slang terms have been used (1 point)
How the psychological treatment of the diagnosis has changed over time (hospitalization? therapy?) (2 points)
What medications have been prescribed over time, their successes, their failures, and their side effects (2 points)
What is the public perception of the mental health condition, and what changes have occurred in how the condition is viewed (2 points)
In your opinion, what time period was the best at providing patients treatment, medication, and dignity? (2 points)
A few notes:
All of these questions will require that you find the information online. It may be provided in the material that is in the modules, but it is very likely that you will need to visit multiple pages to gather the information. I am not going to specify how many references you need, but I require that you cite all of them and include them in your reference section. If you add information and fail to give credit to the source, I have no choice but to give your paper a zero grade. See the syllabus for details.
Please use headings to delineate the different questions above into clear sections. This is important in that sections will tend to blur together, making it difficult to parse out for grading. I would suggest Pioneers; Labels; Treatment; Medication; Public Perceptions; Optimal Time
This paper should be three to five pages, and follow APA rules for cover page, in-text citations, and references.
Be curious, be creative, and enjoy going down a rabbit hole of madness for a few hours.
