A. Assume your client asks you “Is whatever I say in here strictly confidential, and can I be assured that nothing that I talk about with you will go outside of this room?” How would you reply? What specific guidelines could you offer to your client? What kinds of situations might compel you to disclose client confidences to others?
B. You work at a neighborhood mental health agency in which clients are assigned to each worker by the team supervisor. The supervisor assigns you anew case of someone who is suffering from severe schizophrenia and some long term memory loss due to a recent head trauma. You meet with the client and upon seeing him you realize that he was one of your best friends growing up and you even know his family. He does not remember you, however, due to the memory loss. Identify the ethical situation you find yourself in. What are some of the possible issues you are faced with? What do you do to resolve them? Is it appropriate for the client to remain in this program and why?
C. You have a client that you see for individual sessions. For the past two months you have been helping them process their feelings over the unexpected ending of a long-term relationship. Over the last two weeks you notice a change in their overall behaviors towards you. Their dress and mannerisms have become increasingly more provocative during this time frame. What might the client be experiencing? How would you address the issues that are developing? What might you have to redefine for the client and how would you do it?
D. Explain, in full, the process of classical conditioning. You must use all of the appropriate terminology, including abbreviations, and clearly define each by using Ivan Pavlov’s experiment as an example.
E. You have a new client come into your office seeking treatment. The client seems to be the appropriate client for the type of services that you provide. Prior to being able to work with the client, there is something that you want to get first. Identify what it is that you need to get from the client. Can you legally provide services for the person without it? Explain what you must tell the client in order to be able to have the client provide it for you. How does this help in establishing the foundation for a good client/counselor relationship?
F. What are defense mechanisms? Name three, define them and then give a personal example of how you have used that to protect your ego.
G. Your friend tells you that he hates his job. He has always felt trapped as he never wanted to work for his father. He is afraid to disappoint his dad by complaining and he also makes a very decent salary. The work isn’t hard, but he is bored by it. He recently read something about existential theories and is confused by it. Explain existential concepts to your friend tell them how freedom and responsibility are inexplicably tied together using his current situation.
H. Compare and contrast Gestalt Theory with Adlerian Theories. What are the similarities and what are the differences? Please discuss with detail. You may want to address the overall theme, the techniques and goals of therapy as well.
I. Describe the major difference between the ABC model in Behavior Therapy and the ABC Model in CBT using this example: Martina left the house today forgetting her mask. While out and about, she noticed that people were coughing and sneezing. Every time that happened, she got mad at them for being inconsiderate and yelled at them. How might you plot her situation, making up any other details you need, in both ABC models to assist her in therapy?
