discussion post: ” In response to the lecture and the play Eurydice one of the most interesting aspects that I found present in the play is the motif behind Eurydice’s relationship with language and Orpheus’s relationship with music. Language and music are relative to each other, but Sarah Ruhl shows the dynamic between the two in a personified method. One example of symbolism is where Orpheus ties a string around Eurydice’s finger, which is assumed to be her ring finger. The professor explains how the string symbolizes Orpheus’s relationship to music, similar to a string on an instrument as well as his ownership or right over Eurydice. Orpheus also represents the stereotypical man, in ways which he exercises his right over Eurydice such as on page 1002 where Orpheus jokingly says that he won’t let Eurydice out of his sight. Another example of Orpheus being a stereotypical man in that time period is on page 1004 at the wedding where Eurydice is expected to be greeting her guest in the midst of mourning her father, while Orpheus is by himself without any social responsibilities. I admire that Eurydice voices her opinions and is not afraid to reject Orpheus’s sexist comments at times. Such as when he speaks to her lovingly, while telling her that he would like to make her an instrument. She simply says that she does not want to be instrumentalized. This reminds me subtly of Antigone and the feminism that they both exhibit.”
