Perhaps all supervisors should take a course in conflict management. Or perhaps, better still, all employees, both supervisors and subordinates, should study conflict management. Anyone who has worked knows that the workplace is filled with issues and disagreements pertaining to these. Even a straightforward task of assigning professional people to work different shifts can produce a lot of conflict as the next case study suggests. The purpose of this activity is to apply the key concepts, principles, and suggestions from Chapter 12 to the case study. This activity aligns with module outcome 1,2, 4 and 5.
Question for Thursday (Individual Response)
First, you will discuss the case study by posting an individual analysis of the case study. Please ensure you link your analysis to the assigned readings.
Read the case study
Jot down what concepts you read in Chapter 12 that might apply to this scenario.
How does a supervisor assign duties at work in a way that keeps conflict to a minimum?
How does one manage conflict in the workplace?
Are the principles the same at work as at home or are there important differences between home and workplace conflict? Why or why not?
State what behaviors you see operating so that you justify your ideas.
Please post by Thursday at 11:59. You need to post promptly.
Questions for Sunday (Teamwork Response)
The second part of the activity is to come to a consensus as a group. As a group, you will present a recommendation on the best approach to handle the situation. The critical goal of working in this group is to learn how to negotiate with your group. The activity will require you to apply some of the concepts we have covered from previous modules.
Working with your group, develop a summative plan of action to manage the conflict. Please begin this on Saturday.
Although you may recommend against using a third-party intervention, your analysis must include the following:
In your plan of action, include the advantage and disadvantage of using a third-party intervention.
Describe what type of mediation could be most beneficial to manage the conflict.
Your group will post one recommendation as a “summative post.” That is to say, all of you working together must create one recommendation. The recommendation must be posted no later than Sunday at 11:59 PM EST
Include references in your post; use APA style guide.
The instructor will be grading your work individually within the group. If you do not work in the group or provide very little contribution, your grade will reflect that fact.
