The Assignment in a Nutshell:
Using the rhetorical strategies and techniques that we have practiced in class, compose an argument about one of the topics or sub-topics explored in at least one of the following essays: Gottlieb’s “How to Land Your Kid Therapy,” Graff’s “Hidden Intellectualism,” Freire’s “The Banking Concept of Education,” or Beran’s “In Defense of Memorization.”
In your paper, you must respond to and quote from the essay(s), and your argument must include at least five paragraphs (introduction, three body paragraphs, and conclusion).
The goal of this assignment is twofold: develop a unique argument of your own (with a cogent thesis); respond to and reflect on what someone else has said about your topic. Thus, you will get practice not merely making an argument, but also considering other points of view.
Rules and Guidelines:
The thesis must be the last sentence of your introductory paragraph. Your thesis must be an argument of cause/consequence or an argument of evaluation.
In your first paragraph, you must clarify the debate and provide some forecasting points. Most of you will probably find it useful to introduce the essay (with author’s full name) that you will be discussing in greater detail in the body of your argument. If you do not introduce the essay in the first paragraph, you must do so later – using the author’s full name when you first mention it.
At least two of your body paragraphs should contain quotations from the essay. The nature of your argument, however, should determine how much of the essay you use and when you bring it into your discussion.
Quotations must be cited and properly integrated into your discussion.
Body paragraphs should in all cases help develop your argument. This may involve focusing on an idea about which you disagree (or partly disagree) as well as agree.
Your support should come from the essay(s) as well as from your own knowledge and personal experience.
This is not a research paper. You may use only the essays listed above to complete this assignment.
