Question:Research services offered by various cloud providers for disaster recovery and business continuity. Describe one of these services, how it’s implemented and how it accomplishes its goal.

Answer: Cloud services offer various services for information technology teams today, ranging from storage to compute services. Disaster recovery is now a major feature that cloud providers offer. Amazon Web Services offers a service CloudEndure Disaster Recovery, which is a cloud-based disaster recovery option. Amazon describes the service “CloudEndure Disaster Recovery continuously replicates your machines (including operating system, system state configuration, databases, applications, and files) into a low-cost staging area in your target AWS account and prefers Region. In the case of a disaster, you can instruct CloudEndure Disaster Recovery to automatically launch thousands of your machines in their fully provisioned state in minutes” (CloudEndure Disaster Recovery, n.d.). With the service constantly replicating your machine states, you will be able to almost recover instantly from a disaster using this service. The service can be used for cloud-based solutions and on-premises systems; using this CloudEndure can enable companies to have a second site live within minutes, potentially saving the company significantly on recovery efforts.

Question: Ethical decisions in software development. Do you think there should be a “code of ethics” for all software developers? Why or why not? Give examples to support your decision. Would the “stakes” be higher in one type of software versus another? Why or why not? Give examples to support your answer

Answer: There should be a code of ethics for all software developers, which in my opinion would similar to something like the Hippocratic oath of a doctor. Software developers have a lot of power, and mistakes on there part can lead from anything to PII being stolen to a catastrophic amount of money being stolen or even injury or death. For example, suppose the developer of a particular bank’s mobile app acted unethically (obviously there are lot’s of reasons why this probably wouldn’t happen). Still, this app could hypothetically be used to steal money and data.

Though ethical behavior and a code of conduct should apply to all software, the importance is multiplied when dealing with critical software, including medical, military, aviation, etc., which rely on software to get jobs done without room for any error whatsoever. In this case, developers are subject to even more scrutiny (or at least they should be). If they weren’t, their software could lead to injury or death. To me, this situation really underscores the need for software developers to have a robust code of ethics, and one that applies to every software developer (not just the ones developing critical software).

Answer: I believe there should be a coed of ethics for all software developers. In any field, there should be a code of ethics regardless. When coding projects or working with a team, its important to recognize that everyone is working together. That if there is problems, it can lead to professional complications. That’s why everyone needs to follow a code of ethics. While there are general rules such as No harming others and being respectful to everyone, for programming, it would have to be making sure you are authenticating correct coding programs or you are submitting projects on time. Making sure that the project you are submitting is yours and not someone else’s. You just have to uphold yourself to the best person you can be. I don’t necessarily think that there should be a specific code of ethics for each program. While there are some – say you are dealing with medical, privacy, and so on, its expected to handle it with care – it can be generalized and applied to all. Mainly, having confidentially and following the code of ethics properly. If not, there can be lots of legal problems such as dealing with legal cases for plagiarizing or people being fired because they aren’t doing there job properly. It doesn’t have to be so in depth that they are micromanaging each individual, but there needs to be a guideline which everyone has to follow.
