For this assignment, you will be writing a 2-page, double spaced literary analysis of a short story/poem we have read in class. You can pick from either Jacob Ludwig Grimm and Wilhelm Carl Grimm’s “God Father Death” or William Faulkner ‘s “A Rose For Emily” or John Updike’s “A & P” or Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” (Which are the ones I put for assignment topic.)
First begin by selecting one (1) short story from the two (2) stories/poems I mentioned. It is important you pick one that you have the most to say about– that is, the one you feel has the most depth, is the most interesting, is complex, or most engages you. You want to have plenty to say to help you fill up the 2 pages. Pick the story that is a great one to analyze with frameworks for criticism or academic research.
Then select one (1) of the frameworks for criticism (formalist criticism, biographical criticism, historical criticism, psychological criticism, mythological criticism, sociological criticism, gender criticism, gender criticism, reader-response criticism, cultural studies or deconstructionist criticism. Make sure you pick the framework that you understand and are comfortable with please. Closely review your chosen framework in the textbook again before you start your essay. After you have done this, develop an argument about your chosen story/poem that matches your chosen framework.
Your paper must include: an introduction paragraph with a summary of a short story/poem, the author and title of the short story/poem clearly stated, and a clear and argumentative thesis statement. Body paragraphs of appropriate length, Direct quotes and or paraphrases from a secondary source and or the short story/poem in each paragraph, with correct MLA in text-citations, Conclusion paragraph, at least five sentences long, with one of sentences being the thesis statement restated and a Works cited page in MLA format (this page must be at least page 3 of your document.
