The purpose of a position paper is to identify both sides of an issue and to argue for one side, or position, over the other. Please note, however, that a position paper is not simply an opinion piece. Rather, you must review the relevant literature on your chosen topic and, based on your assessment of the issues and the evidence, use that literature to support your position. As such, the quality of your sources is of utmost importance. Your primary sources should come from the academic literature (i.e., peer-reviewed journal articles and books) supplemented with a government report, if appropriate. Your sources should also be as directly related to your topic as possible. Sources that deal with the topic only tangentially will not be considered as “appropriate” or “relevant” as those that focus specifically on the issues under consideration.
Please be sure to
focus specifically on the Canadian context in terms of framing your position.
As you begin to identify the key arguments associated with each position, keep in mind that you must present both sides of the issue as fairly and objectively as possible. For example, resist the temptation to present your opponents’ weakest argument(s) as a means of bolstering your own. If your position is truly stronger than that of your opponents, you should be able to present both sides fairly and convince the reader of the superiority of your position.
There are two options for organizing your paper. The first is to begin with a discussion of your opponents’ position and its limitations and to then present your own position and its strengths. The second option is to provide a point-by-point comparison, explaining why your position is superior to that of your opponents. In either case, your paper must have a clear introduction and
