Good writing skills are an essential professional competency. In order to assist students in strengthening their writing skills, the Instructor will grade grammar, spelling and format in addition to content in all written assignments.
Unless otherwise instructed, all assignments must follow the Written Assignment Protocols listed below. Up to 20% of each assignment grade will be based upon successfully following these protocols (except as noted below). NOTE: Student is expected to respond to Instructor comments and recommendations to improve writing skills which may include utilization of the Academic Success Center. If no improvement in writing skills is evident on subsequent assignment(s), student may receive a grade of ‘0’ on the entire assignment(s).
Written Assignment Protocols:
· Standard mechanics of a paper to include:
o Title Page
o Reference page
· Avoid use of contractions

· Be sure to cite and/or quote appropriately (refer to policy on plagiarism)
o Wikipedia is NOT an academic source
· Proof read your paper in addition to using spellcheck (proper grammar and spelling will be graded).
· Remember – written communication is more formal than verbal communication. Do not write the way you speak. Hint: write a draft and rework the next day.
· Page length – does not include title or reference pages
o A ‘2 page paper’ is not a page and a half. Two pages is a minimum of two FULL pages but not much more
o “At least 2 pages” means 2 or more pages (no maximum)
o “2 to 3 pages” means a minimum of 2 pages but not more than 3 pages

Nursing Research Article Review Guidelines
Evidence-based practice can be defined as the conscious and intentional use of the current best evidence in the care of patients and delivery of health care services. It is important for students to begin to understand the process involved in using research reports, case reports, and expert opinion to decide what best practice is. The use of evidence-based practices to guide patient care results in better patient outcomes.
Assignment: Choose a pediatric nursing topic that interests you or something that you have observed in your clinical experience relating to patient care. Do a literature search on this topic, in the library or on the Internet. Find a peer-reviewed nursing practice research article on your subject. This means the article is written by nurses, describing an actual research study that they performed, and has been published in a peer-reviewed nursing journal.
Note: You are looking for articles written by nurses who performed their own research study. Look for an Abstract at the beginning of the article. It should list a Purpose, Study Design/Methodology, Description of Subjects, Results, Conclusions, and Nursing Implications.
To describe how nurses identify the pain in children with sickle cell disease (SCD) and to list the strategies used by them in the evaluation and control of pain.
This is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory research, performed through semi-structured interviews with 13 nurses. The interviews were transcribed and after this process the qualitative data were organized according to thematic analysis.
This study showed that the nurses can identify pain in children with SCD from the signals they emit, such as: constant crying, restlessness, facial expressions and verbal reports. Pain is difficult to evaluate due to the lack of instruments, such as a pain scale. For pain control they use emotional support, promotion of comfort and the administration of drugs prescribed by the doctor.
The nurses recognize the pain of the child and use pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods to control it but have difficulties to assess it.
Beware of articles called Literature Review or Concept Analysis. These will not have the Abstract as described because the authors have not done a research study of their own. Instead, they are reviewing and summarizing a number of research projects done by other people. Articles of this type will not work for this paper.
When you locate an article you like, bring a hard copy or e-mail a copy to the course instructor for approval. Once approved, read the article thoroughly, keep a copy to upload with your paper, and write a review of the article using these guidelines and the Rubric.
The following should be included in your paper:
Submitted in APA format, 3-5 pages plus Title Page and Reference sheet
Sections (HINT: use the topics below as your section headings)
· Why the topic was chosen (Why did this topic interest you?)
· Purpose of the study
· Problem Statement or Hypothesis (Why did the authors want to do this research? What was the problem or issue they were trying to learn more about, or what was the hypothesis they were trying to prove?)
· Design/Methods of the Study
· Sample size and description of the sample
· Data Collection methods
· Results or Conclusions of the Research
· Relevance and Implications for Nursing Practice (Discuss what you learned from the article. What did the authors recommend based on their conclusions? How can this information be used in the care of patients?)
