An Annotated Bibliography is a list of citations and annotations from books, articles, and websites as well as other kinds of documents and research. Each citation is followed by a descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited. It is an incredibly useful research tool that can be used to:
Create a Works Cited or References page
Organize research material
Summarize and synthesize information from research sources
Here’s a model you can check out.
Purpose: Focus on an Important State-wide Issue
This Annotated Bibliography will be a collection of five sources related to a particular issue in your state. Your state could mean the state you live in now, a state you used to live in or a state where you want to live. Someone who reads your annotated bibliography should come away having learned something about an issue of importance in your chosen state and be able to do something with the information, like write a report.
Your sources should represent the different components and voices you need to include in a report on an important issue in your state—which you will be writing next (Project 3). For example, you should include at least one source that contains a definition or description. You should have up to date information on the issue, so you might reference a newspaper you find in the library’s periodical database or a CNN article you saw in Google News. You could find a video, also via the library and online. Reference documents, which provide comprehensive background information and analysis are a specialty of libraries, though online encyclopedias offer a great entry point that can effectively guide further research. Notice: I am not telling you to find a book, an article, a website, etc. I am asking you to think of the rhetorical purpose of every source you include and be able to explain its value individually and as part of a group. That being said, you are required to figure out how to use the library for this assignment because the DSC library is UH-MAZING!
Double space, 12-point font. Use hanging indent for citations and block style paragraphs for your annotations. Your annotated bibliography must include at least five varied sources that you will be able to choose from to use as sources for your Report on a State-Wide Issue (Writing Project 3). You need at least one source must be from the DSC Library Periodical Database and one from the web (you can decide where the majority of your sources should come from). Don’t forget about the hard copy and ebook resources available from the library as well. You’ll need to come up with a citation in APA or MLA format for each source. Your annotations, which follow each citation, should be written in paragraph form and include:
a summary description of the source,
an evaluation of the source, including a statement that describes what purpose the source might serve as part of your report,
and at least two pertinent quotes.
Your Annotated Bibliography will be graded on formatting, completion, level of correctness, quality and detail in the annotations. I’ll be asking as I grade:
Did you include 5 total citations and annotations?
Does your annotated bibliography prove that you have both read and analyze your sources?
Have you evaluated the quality and usefulness of a source?
Have you summarized a source effectively?
Have you formatted your citations correctly?
Did you include quoted and/or paraphrased material from your source?
Are these sources specific to an issue and a state?
Did you include sources that provide a variety of information about your topic?
Did you include a source from the DSC library?
