Title: The title should be descriptive of what the project was all about. Remember—the title should be in all caps!
Introduction: Using the Photographic Atlas for the Microbiology Laboratory and your lecture textbook as a reference, provide some background information on the Enterics. Include some of their general characteristics, such as Gram staining, cellular morphology, etc. Also, differentiate between the fecal coliforms and other gut bacteria (including but not limited to explaining how they are distinguished on EMB and MacConkey agar). Explain the significance of organisms in the family Enterobacteriaceae, such as where they are found and how they affect health.
Results: Your results section should include a narrative about and a table including the important results that led you to discover the species of your unknown enteric. This might include a distinct colony morphology on EMB and/or MacConkey agars, the results of individual tests, and your Enteropluri results. You DO NOT need to include ALL of the results. Refer to the “Enteric Organisms Flow Chart
” on Canvas for help determining which tests are important for your unknown. The table should be properly formatted and have a descriptive title. It should include the name of the test, the results, and a brief statement of the test’s purpose. Importantly, the results section should be more than just a table–make sure you summarize your results in the narrative and refer to the table. Your final statement should be the species you identified.
Works Cited: The only required citation is for your Atlas book, but if you use any other sources, make sure to cite them appropriately. We use the Name, Year citation format* from A Student Handbook for Writing in Biology by Karin Knisely.
