The best papers will use terms from the book and other readings. This is not a research paper. You are not required to read any outside sources other than the book you choose and the readings from class. However, a little bit of research might help you understand the book or specific concepts or ideas.
All reports will be typed, double-spaced in 12pt., New Roman font. Margins will be set at 1” for the top and bottom and 1.25” left and right.
The first page and one-half to two pages should summarize the book’s primary argument. What does the book say? You should quote from the book as a way to summarize it. However, the quotations should be short and you must discuss what the author is saying in the quotation. You must properly cite the author. For example: “Communities have always set limits on the depths of self-destructive iconography, language and action that will be allowed” (Rose, 2008: 28). This means (the author, date of publication: page number). Any resources other than the book you choose to discuss must be listed in a separate bibliography at the end of your paper.
The next page to page and one-half will be a critique of the major argument/findings of your book. How do you feel about their argument? Are they right or wrong? Why? What are they overlooking? What needs more explanation? Use concepts, theories, ideas, data, etc. from your class readings and from other sources to assist you in making your own argument.
Summarize three specific major ideas from the book. You might choose to summarize and critique three distinct chapters. Each of these should be one to one and one-half pages.
Conclude your paper by reiterating briefly what you stated in your paper and final thoughts about the book, how it made you view hip hop, your overall impression of the subject matter of the book and its relationship to larger issues discussed or related issues.
