You should pick a topic that interests you, investigate an area that is relevant to your life as it relates to media. However, try to think about how the issue you are interested in may impact/ is impacting/will impact society on a more general scale as well.

You can choose any area of media upon which to focus, but this should take a distinct scholarly bent. Once you start looking into topics, you may find that the precise area you are looking for doesn’t have much related research. You should pick a topic that is related, but has some research history behind it. You can then use your Future Research section to explain what is missing and what should/could still be done.

Some popular areas are: Effects of Violence and related theories; How people relate to media characters (parasocial interaction; disposition theories, etc); How the media impacts body image; how people process news or persuasive messages; how people process comedy, horror, or other emotion-inducing media; Social media and how people use it and are affected by it; video game usage and effects; positive effects of media (the area known as positive media psychology). There are many more, of course. I am always available to help you select a topic.

You will have numerous sources for your paper, but the absolute minimum is 15. A paper with 30 or more citations would not be unusual for this project. You must do your background research in order to produce a good paper. I can help you find some sources that are appropriate to your topic to get you started. We also have an excellent resource in our own departmental librarian, Ellen Hampton Filgo, who has created excellent research guides for this class. We will have at least one training session with Ellen to familiarize you with the resources available to you, including Zotero.
