It would be swell if we could do a field trip in this course–visit some of the sites we learn about and see for ourselves what the place looks, sounds, smells, and feels like. Alas, that would require resources we don’t have handy. But we can research, imagine, and plan! And that’s what this assignment is about. You should demonstrate your travel planning skills, but more importantly, show off your understanding of the places and readings we’ve explored this semester.
In this assignment, you will:
Explain the diversity of human experience across time and place.
Situate works of world literature within historical, social, economic, scientific, and other contexts.
Control conventions of language, mechanics, and MLA format in academic writing.
Exhibit research skills in writing.
1 – Pretend you have $3000 to spend on a field trip for this course. Choose one of the units we studied and plan a trip. Create an itinerary and tell us about the trip you’ve planned, especially how your choices are related to the course content. Your itinerary should include:
Travel information from Las Vegas to your chosen location, including information about visas, immunizations, identification, flight numbers, airlines, costs, and time.
Lodging information for each night of your trip. Include costs and a link to each hotel, hostel, campground, etc.
At least one activity that is related to the course content for each day of the trip. Describe it, say how it’s related and what we’ll learn there, list costs, ground transportation, and link to an image or website where we can learn more.
At least one restaurant or other activity for each day of the trip. Describe it, say why you want to go there, list costs, ground transportation, and link to an image or website where we can learn more.
An opening paragraph that explains your goals for your field trip.
2- Prepare a summary budget that shows how you’ll spend all $3000 of your imaginary field trip money. You must reserve 10% as an emergency fund in case you break your ankle or have to bribe someone (you can spend it on souvenirs on your last day if you still have it).
3- Choose an image that would go on a postcard you’d send me from your field trip. Write me a short message that says what the most important thing is that you learned in this course.
4- Make a post with your postcard, budget, and itinerary.
5- For 1 point of extra credit, find a classmate who planned a trip somewhere different from yours. Please help make sure everyone gets a comment. Leave them a comment about the part of their trip that looks most fun to you and the part you think you’ll learn the most from. You can earn a point of extra credit for each peer review you write, for as many as 25 classmates.
