Overview You will be assigned an artifact or set of artifacts from our department collections.
You should research many aspects of the objects and prepare a written report and presentation that shares your findings and connects the artifact to our course topics.
Complete the assignment as follows: Guidelines for essay • 7-8 page, double-spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font, 1” margins. Note: page requirements do not include the header, images, references, etc. • Must use at least 10 peer-reviewed sources. Be sure to use recent sources as well as older sources in order to balance your understanding of the topic. • Pages 1-2 should describe the artifacts in detail, including: ▪ Material ▪ Form ▪ Measurements / dimensions (you can take the measurement info from the collections database). ▪ Function ▪ Decoration ▪ Condition ▪ history (if known – how UNC got it for example, and who owned it before that), etc. • Pages 3-4 should describe the culture, time period, and context from which the artifacts come. This should include a discussion of the culture area and a brief overview of its history/prehistory, biome/environment, etc. For this info do not rely on the collections database alone because those cultural associations are often conjecture. Instead, research parallels (other items like yours) to discern its time period and culture based on form, decoration, material, style, etc. • Page 5 Explain how the artifacts were utilized. What were their purposes? In what contexts are artifacts like that found? Who would make them? Who would use them? How would it be disposed of / enter the archaeological record if it is an archaeological object? • Page 6 Discuss the symbolism of your artifact. What did it represent? Does its form, decoration, or function symbolize something? • Pages 7-8 should describe additional things that you learned about the artifact – be creative and curious. For example, you may want to dive into the artifact’s material composition, manufacturing process, gender factors, symbolism, etc. • Extra pages: allowed if necessary, to elaborate on content from pages 5-8. • Bibliography (not included in page count). • Figures (as needed to illustrate portions of your essay; not included in page count).
