Write an essay of no more than 600 words, not counting your citations, analyzing your assigned city in terms of your assigned topic. Your assigned topic is traffic, you can also write about cars, suburbs, and sprawl. Depending on your city, you may also be able to write about neighborhoods and community, and possibly gentrification. The idea here is to make one or two good, specific points directly related to the assigned city. You will be finding a handful of appropriate, authoritative sources about your topic in your city. Do consider that the grader is looking for mastery of ideas from SOCIOLOGY 3353 and not just a simple description of your assigned city.
Cite sources ASA style.
Make certain that you cite sources as needed and fully. On the midterm, a number of students made significant, basic errors of citation. For instance, about eight of you listed sources at the end of the paper but gave no indication in the body of the paper about which sources had been used for what information. Every source cited at the back must be explicitly cited in the body of the paper, at the relevant spot. By the same token, every source cited parenthetically in the body of the paper must be cited in full in the reference list at the end of the essay.
As you know, you must attribute to its originator ANY information that is not general information or from your own head. That means citing your sources.
If you quote anyone, you must give a full reference.
If you’re cutting and pasting ANYTHING, EVER, you’re almost surely cheating.
If you get an idea from someone but paraphrase his/her words, you must give a full reference.
If you get a general idea or a specific detail from someone and present it entirely in your own words, you still must give a full reference.
If you use someone else’s words, omit the quote marks, but add a reference at the end of the sentence, that is an egregious form of plagiarism, too.
These are not the only mandatory rules to follow.
