Position Paper

Position Paper:

A position paper is a written essay that discusses a reasonable and arguable opinion about a specific issue. The purpose of a position paper is to describe support for that particular opinion and present an overall foundation for your argument. Part of the process of writing a position paper includes collecting facts and information to support or disprove the hypothesis. For this reason, the paper should include and describe factual and quantifiable factors as much as possible (This means using credible, peer-reviewed sources). Only once the facts and information have been thoroughly researched should a position be stated. In this case, you will either support or reject a change in the current federal legal status of marijuana.

Major Sections of the paper:

Title Page: See APA guidelines on how to format a title page.

Introduction: This section should include a brief introduction and explanation of the problem that is being discussed, the reason a change/policy is needed, and relevant issues relating to the topic. Make sure you address what it means to be a Schedule 1 substance and define all terms such as ‘medical use’, ‘recreational use’, and anything else relevant. State your position on what you think the legal status of marijuana should be (remain illegal, legal medical use, legal recreational use or other).

Methodology: You will need to use at least 3 peer-reviewed research articles that support your position. For example, if you are for the legal medical use, then you would find articles that support efficacy of marijuana to treat certain conditions. If you are against legal use, then find articles supporting why it should remain illegal (negative effects, etc.). Once you have your articles, then you will summarize the methods used to collect the data for each study, as well as summarize the findings for each study. So basically, what did the researchers find and what did they do to come to that conclusion (for each article)?

Discussion: This is where you will relate the research article findings to your position. For example, if you are for legalization, how do the research findings support that opinion? You must use the information, facts, and data from your scientific references for this section.

Position Statement: A short, clear statement of the position. This should be the last sentence in your paper.

References: See APA guidelines for information on how to cite and format the reference page.
