ESSAY ASSIGNMENT – Part III of Course
NEGOTIATING POLITICAL CONFLICT IN MODERNITY
From the beginning of Western political theory, conflict has been a central concern. It has been viewed as both endemic and remediable, a severe problem that can be moderated if properly understood and addressed. That said, how conflict is seen, where it is said to come from, and what form it takes is dealt with differently by each theorist. In this part of the course, we have read writers address different dimensions of conflict in relation to the modern nation-state and capitalism or as a result of the state being used to exercise domination.
The following two essays, from which you are to choose one and write about it, offer different angles on the question of conflict. The main focus of your essay should be addressing the particulars of the paper topic. But keep in mind the above considerations when staking out the features of your essay, as well as the guidelines offered on the Paper-Writing handout. Reviewing lecture notes and the Reading Questions also will be helpful.
Essays are due no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, December 7 – via turnitin.com. Same formatting rules apply as previously: 1″ margins; double-spaced; 12 pt. font; Microsoft doc/docx/rtf or WordPerfect – not pdf. Length should be @ 6 pages.
Late essays will be penalized.
1. Explain, critically analyze, and comparatively evaluate the primary sources of social conflict and how they are addressed, according to two of the following four writers or sets of writers: Marx, Freud, Hayek and/or Friedman, and Rawls. (You may refer to Marcuse in your essay, but you do not need to. His work does not qualify as one of the writers or sets of writers – e.g., Hayek/Friedman] you need to discuss.)
2. Explain, critically analyze, and comparatively evaluate the different forms of domination perceived by two of the following three writers, as well as how they seek to address them: De Beavoir (sexism), Fanon (colonialism), and Arendt (political and democratic suppression).
