Assignment Description
ENG 111 classes include a common final exam administered at the end of the semester. There are essentially two components to the exam:
● Part I: Summary
○ You will write a one-to-two paragraph summary of the assigned text.
● Part II: Argumentative Essay
○ You will write an argumentative essay in response to one of two broad questions based on the
text. The essay calls for a close reading of the assigned text.

Submission Details
Please note that this is a timed assessment. You will have 2 hours to complete both parts of the exam. After the allotted time has elapsed, your response will be submitted automatically.
The exam will be available via Blackboard on Tuesday, December 8th at 9:00AM. Please submit your response no later than 11:59PM on the same day.
You will only be allowed ONE attempt to complete this exam. No late submissions will be accepted.
Evaluation Rubric Part I: Summary – 20%
● Does your summary contain all of the key ideas from the assigned text, including complete and accurate information about the source?
● Is your summary organized? Does your summary have a clear topic sentence and supporting sentences that explain key ideas from the assigned text?
● Is your summary free of grammatical and syntax errors?
Part II: Argumentative Essay – 80%
● Content (25%)
○ Is your essay controlled by clear, precise, well-defined thesis statement?
○ Does your essay provide a compelling and original analysis of the text?
○ Are your ideas united and logically organized in a way that leads to a thought-provoking conclusion?
● Development (25%)
○ Are your main points well supported with sufficient (but not excessive) use of evidence?
○ Does your essay use well-chosen examples and persuasive reasoning to develop and support your thesis consistently?
● Organization (15%)
○ Does your essay have a coherent structure?
○ Are your ideas united and logically organized in a way that leads to a thought-provoking conclusion?
○ Are your paragraphs focused on distinct units of thought, controlled by specific and detailed topic sentences?
○ Do you implement appropriate, clear, and smooth transitions?
● Style (10%)
○ Are the sentences well-worded and well-constructed? Should some sentences be combined for clarity? Should others be broken into two or more sentences, so ideas receive proper emphasis?
○ Do you use quotations and MLA citations effectively?
● Grammar (5%)
○ Have you proofread and edited your piece for grammatical and punctuation errors?
