BLST 103: The Politics of Black Liberation: The 1960s Final essay

Other instructions from the professor:
Your paper should include information regarding your text or topic, what point or points you intend to argue, and what data, or the work of which other scholars, you intend to use to help support your arguments. The point of this final paper project is to enable you to comfortably discuss 1960s black liberation politics and culture and their impact on society generally. Hence, you are to focus on ideas. A biographical approach that’s focused solely or primarily on narrating the bare events of a person’s life will be of no use to you as an essay topic. If you are examining a song, you can focus on rhetoric, image, figurative language, and form in the lyric, as well as describing what happens with the recording musically. If you are examining a historical narrative, your description will also consider the interrelationship between person (or persons), action, place, time, manner, and means. If you are examining a philosophical work or idea, make sure you talk about the work’s relevance to its time, place, and circumstance. For mixed genre works or phenomena, you may consider any and all of these factors as possible topics. You can use any one of these factors as a focus for illustrating how a work or act exemplifies its subject matter. Choose one topic, or a subset of one topic, as the focus of your paper. Attempts to cover several topics or to take a broad sweep approach within one topic will only make your task that much more difficult. You can choose to offer your own analysis, or you may write an essay that synthesizes scholarly opinion on a particular topic before offering the reader your own conclusions. Either way, be sure to credit all your sources and avoid any approach that can expose you to charges of plagiarism. One good source that I’ve found useful in thinking about the genre of “commentary,” which is one way of describing your final essay, is the “About” page for Glossator, an online literary journal: https://glossator.org/about/. While this description may seem overly broad, I’m offering the link with the intention of offering some guidance as you develop your essay. Sample essays from this journal, or other relevant scholarly and academic journals, may also be useful.
I told the professor I was going to write about prompt number 2 (Discuss how the African American political, social, and cultural movements of the 1960s contributed to the overall welfare of United States society. This should be a practical as well as one about ethics, philosophy, and values.) but if preferred you can switch to 1,3 or 4.
