Extra-credit paper Instructions
This paper is optional. However if you are interested, read this document thoroughly.
What you will have to do:
You will have to watch the documentary: “Walmart: The High Cost of the Low Price” (1hr and 30 min), and make a summary of between 1 ½ to 2 pages, explaining what you watched in the video, incorporating three to six concepts already seen in class. Some of these concepts are: production, exchange and consumption, Capitalism, means of production, reciprocity, redistribution, markets, agency, structural violence, globalization, glocalization, homogenization of culture, habitus, Global North, Global South, Neoliberalism, fair trade, etc. commodity chain, world system, etc.
Notice: these are just some of the concepts, but you can incorporate any other seen during the course, and you do not have to use all of them. Actually, three well elaborated concepts are preferred than just name-dropping without elaboration. I already watched the video, so a summary without anthropological concepts has little value for me. Also, you do not have to talk about the full video, you can just focus on the sections useful to make your point.
Your experience is valued, too. In Anthropology, your experience is valued as long as you relate it to a wider social phenomenon, like Globalization, Glocalization, or structural violence. You live in the US, the core of Globalization, and perhaps you will find the experiences in the video relatable, so speaking in first person is valid, too. This is called reflection. Your experience needs to be reflexive.
Format: one and a half to two pages, 1-inch margins, double space, 12 points font.
Your paper will have to have ONE paragraph of introduction providing a resume of the concepts you will elaborate in your paper, and the point that you will make using the concepts. Example, “by using the concepts of x, y, and z, I want to say/demonstrate that the video provides some examples of how Neoliberalism has affected the commodity chain.” In your paragraphs you will elaborate the concepts, in order to elaborate the point stated in the introduction, and end with a conclusion.
Deadline: The last day of classes: Wednesday December 9 at 11:59 PM. Mark your Calendar correctly because there will NOT be make-ups nor extensions. You have over a month to prepare it. Submit your paper in the link provided in Module 16, available as of now.
