The basic task:
Write a paper (2,000 words) that develops an argument by various modes—critique of others’ arguments, analysis of data (numbers, footage, etc.), analogy, and creative content.
Who Can We Trust?
One thing we noticed/mentioned in discussions regarding the readings from The End of Trust was that privacy is getting redefined by a new generation, and that it’s pretty scary that our data is out there for the highest bidder. The question seems to be: what do we do about this? What can we do? What are the theses that might coalesce from all of this?
Write a paper about an issue related to privacy, data, and “the culture of surveillance [that is] affecting the moral development of a generation coming of age online” (from the dust jacket of TEOT). You might want to start by asking: how is this issue being framed in rhetorically significant ways? Your thesis should claim that your chosen issue is important (though you will need to be much more specific than that–you’ll need to say why) and that close critical reading of the framing methods is essential to understanding the issue (meaning you’ll need to actively assess your sources). You need to build toward, or develop along the way, a conclusion about something we should do or think about the issue.
**If you need more direction, you may respond specifically to the climate warning analogy that Doctorow develops in “Peak Denial.” Make a claim about whether you think it is a false or an appropriate analogy; use research to back up your claim; and explore, at some point in the essay, your own generational biases.
• MLA Works Cited (Author Page Format) and in-text citations (I will grade these strictly–many of you are still dropping in quotes without much context and ignoring Works Cited format).
• 5 credible sources that make strong contributions to your argument—please demonstrate thorough knowledge of the rhetorical situation of each source (meaning: give context, author, publication, etc. IN THE TEXT OF YOUR PAPER). One of these sources must be a classmate (quote/discuss what she or he says in the Discussion Board on privacy and surveillance). The discussion board is one source, even if you use more than one post.
• If it makes sense to do so, you may use images (so long as you treat them like texts with rhetorical value).
• Concession/“refutation” section or paragraph. See WLTC(Writing Logically, Thinking Critically (8th Edition)–by Cooper and Patton) Chapter 4.
++Bonus points for calling out a logical fallacy in someone else’s argument/rhetoric (but doing this must serve your argument).
++Bonus points given for creativity and style.
